In Part 1 of this series, we talked about the difference between lifespan and health span. Americans live to 78 on average, but average health ends around 66. That 12-year gap is where chronic disease steals good years. The goal of this series is simple: help you shrink that gap, one condition and one habit at a time.
We are starting with sleep apnea, and not by accident. Of the four conditions this series covers, sleep apnea is the most treatable, and the payoff shows up fastest. Untreated, it quietly compounds: high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation, insulin resistance, daytime fatigue, depression, and elevated risk of stroke and heart attack. Every one of those steals’ health span. Treated, most of that risk comes back down, and you feel the difference in weeks, not years.
What Actually Shrinks the Gap
These are ranked. If you only do one thing, do the first one.
1. Use your PAP therapy every night, all night. Consistency is the single biggest lever, and it is not close. Four hours a night is the insurance threshold, not the health threshold. Patients who use therapy the full night see better blood pressure, better glucose control, and better daytime energy. Treat the machine like brushing your teeth: not optional, not negotiable. Every hour you sleep without it is an hour your body spends fighting for oxygen instead of repairing itself.
2. Fix the small annoyances before they become quit reasons. Mask leaks, dry mouth, pressure discomfort, and skin irritation are the top reasons people abandon therapy. All of them are solvable with a mask refit, a humidification adjustment, or a pressure review. If something bothers you, call us at 857-400-0044 or email support@easternmedtech.com. Do not white-knuckle it, and do not quit quietly. Most comfort problems take one phone call to fix.
3. Replace your supplies on schedule. Masks lose their seal, cushions harden, and filters clog. Worn supplies mean worse therapy and worse sleep, and you often will not notice the decline because it happens gradually. Resupply is covered by most insurance on a set schedule for a reason. If you are not on our resupply program, ask us about it.
4. Protect the rest of your sleep. PAP treats the apnea, but sleep hygiene does the rest. A consistent bedtime, a dark and cool room, no alcohol close to bed, and no screens in the last half hour all improve how restorative your sleep is. Alcohol deserves special mention: it relaxes the airway muscles and makes apnea worse, so a nightcap works directly against your therapy.
5. Watch your weight and your heart numbers. Weight loss often reduces apnea severity, sometimes dramatically. Blood pressure and A1c are your scoreboard, because sleep apnea, diabetes, and heart disease feed each other. Bring your therapy data to your doctor visits so they can see the whole picture. If you also live with diabetes or heart disease, the next posts in this series are written for you.
6. Tell your bed partner what to watch for. The people who sleep next to you often notice what you cannot: returning snoring, gasping, or restlessness. Those are signs your therapy may need an adjustment. Make them part of the team.
The Payoff
Treated sleep apnea gives back energy, mood, focus, and cardiovascular protection. That is health span, measured in mornings you feel rested and afternoons you do not fight to stay awake. Most patients who stick with therapy say the same thing: they did not realize how bad they felt until they felt better.
Our Part and Yours
Our part is making nightly therapy as easy as possible: the right equipment, comfortable mask fittings, supplies that arrive before you run out, and a team you can reach when something is not working. Your part is showing up for it, one night at a time.
If anything is standing between you and consistent therapy, a leaky mask, a supply gap, a machine question, call us at 857-400-0044 or email support@easternmedtech.com. That is what we are here for.
